Indoor Scenery in Light Hwang Seon-Tae¡¯s Familiar and Unfamiliar
Mi-Ae Bae | Director | LEE & BAE
To try to know and understand a person, some people might look at their friends, or the food they eat, or the books they read. For me, rather than my friends, food, or books, I rather think that my space of habitation, the place where I can truly be myself and relax, can explain my character much better. In terms of such spaces, the domestic space of my house provides just such a place for me, a place where my honest character can emerge. All of the objects in the house reflect and absorb my life story and experience, so the space of the house becomes a familiar place that represents me. One the other hand, it is also an unfamiliar and strange place because the objects are not directly ¡®me.¡¯ In the works of Hwang Seon-Tae, domestic objects placed in an indoor space clearly reveal themselves through the twin delineating devices of green lines and light, and are established as elements that reflect the character of the scene. However, for the unaware viewer the significance of such objects will go unnoticed, and they simply appear as isolated items floating in an unfamiliar domestic space.
Hwang Seon-Tae, who depicts the existence of objects through the process of constantly analyzing and examining them, focuses not on images or conceptual content as such, but on the object itself and representing experiential moments in definite spaces. He expresses the existence of objects in his two or three-dimensional work in glass in an indirect, ambiguous manner rather than in an obvious way. He uses glass and light as his material media, rather than more traditional materials such as oil and canvas, to highlight the visual qualities these phenomena while also projecting the presence of other objects in space. His imagery portrays the light transmitted through the window as well as the shadows linking the indoor and outdoor spaces. It reveals the reverse side of the visible world, giving the impression that time has stopped. The green outline used to express objects¡¯ silhouettes is of course not intended as an actual representation of reality. Because the type of spaces he depicts are so clearly important in our lives, the artist uses green to represent vitality and evoke a modern sensibility. While the objects placed in the indoor space might resemble dull geometric forms at first glance, upon further viewing, the surrounding light reveals them in a gentler more humane way.
Hwang¡¯s Familiar and Unfamiliar (2011-) can be divided into the light plane series, which the artist is currently focusing on, the three-dimensional glass series, and the glass photo series, which became the basis for his current work. In the light plane series, the artist depicts objects with precise lines over a blurry monochrome image to completely exclude a firm notion of materiality and volume from the scene. The form of objects within are delineated through single lines and exist only as a fixed-images whose precise appearance is left undefined. However, within this indistinct approach the artist then introduces light to clarify the character of the objects and the space, even though a realistic depiction of materiality is absent. In so doing, Hwang transforms the space into a realm where both silence and life co-exist. Light enables the viewer to intuitively detect many invisible things surrounding the environment, in addition to the things made visible through Hwang¡¯s delineation. When light is included within this pictorial space consisting of simple lines drawn on a plane, it highlights the exterior surface of the objects, and the blank monochromic plane appears as a three-dimensional and warm space. A geometrically and mathematically precise, and unrealistic space is given a breath of life through this depiction of light and air, presenting a quiet sense of unity with the scene. In terms of the physical construction of these works, sanded glass expressing shadow in the frame and two other pieces of glass outlined on their surface overlap at a certain interval to pass light, and then the transparency of the glass is properly adjusted to make the objects stand out.
Before the Light Plane series, the artist produced a three-dimensional glass series and a glass photo series. Within these works, Hwang mainly focused on creating meanings through the extremely elaborate practice of engraving text on glass. His three-dimensional glass books or glass newspapers offer a direct criticism of ¡¯paper¡¯ books and newspapers as well as various sociological metaphors. Glass books and newspapers with letters or pictures cannot be turned over, thus one misses the link between knowledge contained in them and only obtains a fragmentary knowledge or discourse. Also, due to the transparency of the glass, the letters reflected between the pages are not intact or legible. By reading a glass book or newspaper without contextual connection, one finds that the meaning is unexplainable and incomprehensible. Through the conventions of writing and reading, printed books and newspapers allow people to grasp hidden meanings and implications and the meaning is revealed through the context between the lines, but we cannot know whether it is true or not. These indecipherable glass books and glass newspapers are transparent and have nothing to hide, yet conversely, they express a world view that tells us nothing can really be read or known. In the glass photo series, Hwang first created a flat-panel work based on realistic photographs which he then blurred (as if it were out of focus), by layering photographic images behind a glass cover. Through this work, the artist tries to emphasize the fictionality of the scene depicted, stressing that it is not just by description that things are revealed as present objects. He wants to show the process of how the monotonous, constant quality of light in this specific instance, and in general, becomes real for us by gaining materiality and resolution in relation to three-dimensional objects.
As the above synopsis indicates, Hwang Seon-Tae has dedicated his artistic career to expressing the existence of things. This stems from his interest in himself and other people living everyday lives. Many visible or invisible substances that people consume through a day's work or a lifetime will be considered trivial to objective observers, but a purpose of life, or even a religious necessity to others. The substances we consume represent ourselves and they change us. Without necessarily distinguishing metaphysics from antimetaphysics, and without being bound by the dichotomy of material and spirit, a practice such as Hwang¡¯s indicates how we try to skillfully harmonize the material world into a tool of self-reflection, whether positive or negative. As indicated through this work, despite being surrounded by an overflowing abundance of material objects, the intrinsic ¡°familiar and unfamiliar¡± nature of human space persists across all our real and imagined lives.
Born in Shinan, South Jeolla Province, in 1972, Hwang Seon-Tae graduated from Kyung Hee University with a major in Art Education and from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design and the Aufbaustudium program at the same institution in Halle, Germany. Beginning with his first exhibition in Giebichenstein, Halle, Germany in 2006, Hwang has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the U.K., Austria, and other parts of the world. He has also participated in a range of major domestic and international art fairs including KIAF, Art Karlsruhe, Art Stage Singapore, Art Miami, Art New York, and Abu Dhabi Art. Due to the sustained recognition for the quality of his work, Hwang has been named in a wish list of global collectors, making him one of the world¡¯s most desirable artists. He won the Grand Prize at the Shinsegae Art Festival in 2008, the LöwenhofArt Forum Grand Prize in 2007, and a Special Prize at the Opelvillen Glass Art Contest.
